Ceannabháin, also known as bog cotton or cotton grass, is a plant commonly found in the peat bogs and moorlands of Ireland, Scotland, and other parts of the British Isles.

In Irish folklore, bog cotton is often associated with fairies and spirits. It was believed that the plant's white tufts were fairy seats or beds. Some legends suggested that the plant had the power to ward off evil spirits. For this reason, bog cotton was sometimes gathered and kept in homes as a protective charm.

Beyond folklore, bog cotton plays a crucial role in the ecology of peatlands. It helps in the formation of peat, which acts as a carbon sink, and thus contributes to combating climate change. The plant's roots stabilize the bog surface and provide habitats for various insects and birds.

In some parts of Ireland and Scotland, bog cotton is seen as a symbol of endurance and the ability to thrive in harsh conditions, reflecting the resilience of the people who live in these rugged landscapes.
