My tribute to Dora

Today, she is mainly known for being the muse for Picasso’s Weeping Woman. However, Maar’s work was radical, political and innovative in its own right. She inspired photographers, the surrealists and Picasso himself

Dora was a successful fashion and commercial photographer, a social documentary photographer as well as being a left-wing political activist.

She developed into a dazzling surrealist photographer in the mid to late-1930s

Maar was introduced to Picasso in 1935 and was his mistress for nine years, documenting the creation of his 1937 masterpiece Guernica, providing the model for thirty or so many paintings and many drawings on the theme of the Weeping woman, and under his encouragement taking up painting again

After the break-up with Picasso, and the start of years struggling with depression – she never returned to photography however from 1940 to her death in 1997 she experimented with a range of painting styles from her home in rural France.
