My tribute to Paula Modersohn-Becker
Paula Modersohn-Becker was a German expressionist painter. She did landscapes, still life's and domestic scenes but her major works were portraits. Trained in the methods of realism and naturalism she had a recognizable simplicity to form. She was the first woman to paint a naked self-portrait in 1906, in doing so, she depicted female self-understanding in a way never quite seen before in the history of modern art - at a time when women were increasingly demanding their social and political independence. She was a revolutionary in the history of modernism.
Unfortunately she died at the age of 30. What would she have become if she didn't die so young!
