"Saffron"
The love story of Crocus and Smilax.
The God Crocus was unhappy with his love affair with the nymph Smilax, and he was turned by the gods into a plant bearing his name, the crocus (saffron). Smilax is believed to have been given a similar fate and transformed into bindweed.
Crocus and Smilax may be turned to flowers,
And the Curetes spring from bounteous showers
I pass a hundred legends stale, as these,
And with sweet novelty your taste to please
— Ovid, Metamorphoses.
