A tribute to  Margarita Gil Roësset

1927 in Spain was a year with a generation name. Federico García Lorca, Luis Cernuda, Vicente Aleixandre, Rafael Alberti, Salvador Dalí or Picasso among others are the names that are familiar to all of us. We studied them in educational centers in our childhood and adolescence, there are books, reports, movies, documentaries… We learn their poems, we honor them by naming streets, museums, libraries and schools after them. But they never included a group of artists women from the same generation, Las Sin Sombrero: visionary artists and fighters who shine again with their own light, thanks to recent studies and documentaries that have brought them out of anonymity to have a complete vision of the so-called Silver Age, in memory of the great Spanish Golden Age.

Margarita Gil Roësset was part of this group, she was a sculptor, illustrator and poet, she was admired by intellectuals of her time being considered as a very skilful sculptor with a unique style. She was a prodigy child and illustrated her first book at the age of 7. At the age of 15 she already mastered her drawings and she started doing sculptures. But her lack of confidence, youth and her impossible love for Spanish poet Juan Ramón Jiménez made her so unhappy that she decided to commit suicide in 1932 at the age of 24. Before she made the decision to no longer be with us she collected most of her work and destroyed.
