"Abra"
"Abra"
My next story is about Judith beheading Holofernes. The story behind this painting is about a Jewish widow called Judith, she went dining with Holofernes, an invading Assyrian general, he drank heavily throughout the evening until he passed out. It was then when Judith and her handmaiden Abra, decapitated him with his own sword. The two women slipped unnoticed from the enemy camp carrying off the head as gruesome evidence that Judith had saved her city from enviable destruction. This story has been painted by a few well known artists such as Caravaggio, Cristiano Allori o Artemisia Gentileschi and they chose to portray the incident or after the incident carrying the head. My version is the reaction of the handmaiden, after they murder him.
