The Ama ("women of the sea") are traditional Japanese female free-divers.

They dive without oxygen tanks, gathering shellfish, seaweed, and sometimes pearls.

Mostly in coastal areas like Mie Prefecture (especially around Toba and Shima), and Wajima on the Noto Peninsula.

Many current Ama are elderly—some in their 60s to even 80s—still diving with incredible skill.

The practice goes back over 2,000 years and has been passed down through generations, mostly from mother to daughter.

While it's a dying tradition, it's also celebrated—there are museums, festivals, and efforts to preserve Ama culture as an intangible heritage.

"The Ama" - the women of the sea dove deep into the sea. They searched for pearls, not for riches, but to honor the ocean and its secrets.
